On Monday November 10th, 28 Rotarians and one guest met.  President Cindy recognized Veterans in the club, and guest speaker Gail Stafford discussed her experiences with Karen refugees living in Hartford.
 

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF

November 10, 2014 - 12:15 PM

Present: 29 Rotarians and guests.
 
Bob Kiely gave the invocation which focused on Veteran’s Day and then led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance.
 
Club President’s opening remarks:
 
1.Started the meeting recognizing the veterans in attendance and then asked each to briefly describe their military experience.
2.Gave an update on the NICU Web project, and passed around a sign up list for a NICU event at 2pm on the 17th (following the next meeting)
3.PDG Eileen Rau – this week’s Foundation moment, which focused on the different levels of giving and the recognition levels
4.Fernando Vidal gave a status on the Liberty Bank food – it is doing well with over $1000 raised to date.  Note that we raised ~ $2100 last year.
5.Don Chandler – provided an update on the ASD project, noting that it was ‘on a roll’.
6.Bruce Stanger – is working on a project to distribute the book ‘Harold and the Purple Crayon’ to West Hartford Public School first graders as part of pilot program to cover the entire state.
7.Prior President Hap Leabman – shared the awards the club received at the Foundation Dinner – for support to the Rotary Foundation, and for our Polio Plus support.
8.David Mangs– gave a recap of his recent visit to a Rotary club in the LA area
9.John Smeallie – shared his experiences at Rotary Leadership Institute the prior weekend.
 
Sergeant at Arms John Smeallie reports 28 Rotarians are present, including guest Rotarian Karl Brady from the Torrington club.  In addition, there was one guest, Gail Stafford, spouse of Joe and our guest speaker.
 
Happy dollars were then collected, and there was no winner in the drawing. 
 
Guest speaker Gail Stafford discussed her experiences helping with the Karen people of Burma (Myanmar), specifically refugees in Hartford.
 
The meeting was adjourned at 1:40, with President Cindy leading the 4-way test.  The next meeting is November 17th, 2014 at Pondhouse Cafe.
