MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF
October 21st, 2013 - 12:15 PM

Kove gave the invocation with thoughts of striving for a better world followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. During lunch, Hap began the meeting with announcements, starting with:

1. The board voted to give $1,000.00 toward the Senior Bank.
2. Hap will be presenting the $2,200.00 check to Gifts of Music.
3. Reminder: Foundation Dinner is November 7th. We need a couple of more people to register so that we do not leave anyone sitting alone at a table.
4. The Rotary Leadership Institute is coming up on November 2nd in Middletown. Sign up online and the money will be reimbursed.
5. Oscar Santo Domingo reminded us that that October 24th is End Polio Day. 3 countries have reported Polio cases and more cases keep arising. It is important we continue to strive to end Polio.
6. Kyle Egress talked about the Liberty Bank Food Drive. Sedgwick Cleaners will also be selling the Turkey Leg tickets of which donations will go to the Liberty Bank Food Drive. Our goal is to raise $3,000.00.
7. There are two $5,000.00 scholarships available. Rotarians and family members of Rotarians are not eligible to receive these scholarships.
8. We will be participating in the fundraiser for HARC.
9. Kove will be going away January – March and needs more volunteers to sign up to deliver the invocation.

Sargeant at Arms, Todd Bower reports 36 Rotarians, 4 Visiting Rotarians.

Anniversaries and birthdays October 21st (today) is Booker DeVaughns birthday. October 24th is Steve Tessler’s birthday.

Happy Dollars were collected.
• Bruce convinced Annie to go to Israel for Bike Riding
• Karen List went over how wonderful West Hartford Public School System is. Bugbee won the blue ribbon award.

District Governor Mike Barnett was our guest speaker. DG Mike Barnett is originally from South Africa. He came to the United States 22 years ago and joined Rotary. He went over the history of Rotary and how Paul Harris started Rotary Club. DG Mike Barnett also went into great depth on the new changes that Rotary is making. He also spoke about Polio and how Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria still have Polio. DG Mike Barnett explained that Polio Plus is also a concern because it is other childhood diseases such as Measles and1 ½ million children die every year of this. He also discussed how we need to grow Rotary because there are 1.2 million Rotarians for several years. 40,000 Rotarians join each year, however 50,000 leave Rotary. DG Mike Barnett also talked about the 2013-2014 Rotary theme which is Engage Rotary, Change Lives. Lastly, he passed out bookmarks to save the date for the District 7890 Conference which will be 4/25-4/27.

The Raffle Starts Back at $38.00 with no winners Today. We are looking for King of Clubs.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:30, with new member Kyle Brewer leading the 4-way test. The next meeting is October 28th at Pondhouse Cafe.
