Afaf Albur is One of Three Recipients of Our Rotary "Service Above Self" Scholarship
On Wednesday, May 31st, I had the incredible pleasure of presenting one of our Annual $2000 Scholarships to Conard Senior, Afaf Albur. You may remember that she also was the winner of the Women’s History Month Essay contest. The scholarship is dedicated to the senior who best exemplifies the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self.”

There's a lot more to her story. Afaf and her family emigrated to this country in 2015 from Sudan. Her mother had established a comfortable life in Sudan, but knew that opportunities were limited. Her mother entered the green card lottery to emigrate to the United States for nine years in a row, eventually achieving that dream. And, soon after that, civil war broke out in Sudan.

The dream is alive.

Afaf will be starting a program in International Studies at Conn College this September.

The Club is also providing scholarships to a senior at Hall High School and American School for the Deaf. More information on those recipients will be forthcoming.
